Matter, time, and silent dialogue.

Shibori and hand embroidery. Each piece begins with what the dyed textile reveals.

Statement

Shima begins as an open investigation into shibori. I fold, compress, bind and alter the process without searching for a predetermined result. Among the resulting pieces, some remain silent. Others hold a texture, a rhythm or a pattern that seems to welcome another language. Embroidery begins from that recognition. It responds to presence and absence until the work reaches its own point of completion.

The practice

Shibori

Shibori is the starting point of the practice. Through folding, binding, compressing and altering the textile, I create conditions for the dye to act in unexpected ways. The resulting patterns are not designed in advance. They emerge through the interaction between material, pressure, colour and time.

The process

From dye to thread

Embroidery begins with what the dyed textile reveals. I do not seek to reproduce or complete the pattern created by the dye. Instead, I respond to what is present and what is absent, allowing the thread to enter into dialogue with the existing marks, textures and rhythms of the fabric.
